Descriptionvertical, rectangular image depicting a young African-American woman, sitting on a porch and sewing colorful squares of fabric into a quilt. Butterflies float around her, symbolizing beauty, transformation and hope. The gold expanse of the sky and the delicate circles tooled into a halo around her head reference the style and iconography of Medieval Christian altarpieces. A tattered flag, sometimes referred to as “Old Glory,” hangs next to her, but the way that she looks directly at the viewer conveys that it is not the flag but rather she who is the glory, the pride of her country.Collections
