Descriptionalmost squarish scene of two young Spanish women (models). The woman on the right wears the recognizable garments: a white lace mantilla, a flounced skirt with bold flowers and a delicate white embroidered shawl. She is joined by another woman, to her left, wearing a dark dress and a matching black, flowered shawl. They sit indoors on an ornate Neoclassical couch and are surrounded by hanging blankets and wall tapestries. Both gaze towards the viewer. Surrounded by a dark environment, the effect is a striking composition in which the figures connect directly with the audience to draw us into the richly textured room. (see 2022.7.2 for watercolor study)
