DescriptionVertical rectangular scene portraying the labor of harvesting hops from the vines by hand. The difficult, physical nature of the task is balanced by the serene looks on the figures’ faces. The image highlights the communal nature of the job, portraying men, women and children working together. In the foreground, at far right is seated woman, facing forward and nursing a baby; to her left is another woman slighly bent over and facing left, wearing a derby with a child beside her; in center is a slightly-bent man, facing right, wearing hat and smoking pipe; at far left is a woman, facing left and holding basket of hops. Many more workers in middle ground. Hilly field in right background. The finely detailed print is composed of white lines of varying thickness and quality mixed with intense areas of black. The sophisticated placement of lines, such as the delicate crosshatching on the chest of the breastfeeding woman in the lower right region or the contoured lines across the sleeve of the woman next to her, convey subtle volume and depth.Collections
