DescriptionHorizontal painting across a wide canvas, broad swaths of contrasting institutional gray with an eruption of deeply pigmented color that act to soften and humanize the scene. Two central figures, a young boy and teenage girl, relax on a mattress covered by a zippy, orange bedspread decorated with giant flowers. The boy, in a red t-shirt and blue plaid shorts, relaxes on his stomach, while the girl, perhaps his sister, lounges on a yellow pillow and looks at her phone. Behind them at an ambiguous angle, is a concrete gray wall, set off with thicker impasto and glitter to catch the light. Using a strong diagonal to create a scene that nearly spills out into the viewer's space: the concrete wall forms a raking angle moving up from the left to the right, the orange bedspread cuts through the center of the canvas, ending abruptly in a hot-pink pillow, and the white mattress juts through the lower right corner of the work. The children's position at the far edge of the bed nearest the wall seems to keep them from rolling off.Collections
